Department of Animal Genetic Resources Conservation

History of the Department

2005 – separation of the Department of Animal Genetic Resources Conservation out of the organizational structure of the Institute of Animal Production

Head: Prof. Jędrzej Krupiński, PhD, DSc (since 2005), Deputy Manager: Asst. Prof. Józefa Krawczyk, PhD, DSc  (since 2005)

At present, there are 21 people employed in the Department, including 14 scientific employees and 7 technical ones.

The separation of the Department of  Animal Genetic Resources Conservation in 2005 out of the organizational structure of the Institute was a formal distinction for long term, earlier work and the activities of the team of the employees at present working in it, in the field of animal genetic resources conservation of farm animals in Poland. After the accession of Poland to European Union in 2004 it was essential to prepare national agriculture to use new possibilities of financial support for the activities in the field of genetic resources conservation, which comes from European Union funds and at the same time including our country into the mainstream of Union agricultural policy.

The Laboratory of Genomics

General Information

The Laboratory of Genomics was established in 2011 and is a scientific-research unit of National Research Institute of Animal Production. The laboratory employs five researchers and one technician and is supported by the data center of Institute of Animal Production. The laboratory is equipped with the cutting-edge devices for genomic analyses from Illumina (HiScanSQ) enabling analysis of high-density microarrays as well as Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). It also has two devices for nucleic acid quantification: real-time PCR and capillary sequencer (Backman Coulter), along with the required equipment. The laboratory is also equipped with two microscopes: the inverted microscope with the micromanipulator and the fluorescent microscope for evaluation of karyotypes and structural rearrangements of the genome. The laboratory carries out research related to genetics and genomics of farm and hobby animals such as dogs, cats, etc.

Department of Animal Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics

History of the Department

In 1964 the vice-director of the Institute, Prof. Juliusz Jakóbiec and Prof. Jan Rapacz established the Department of Animal Immunogenetics on their own initiative. The Department originally dealt with a study of cattle blood groups. Subsequently, the assessment of erythrocyte antigens of blood included pigs – in the Institute’s Experimental Station Pawłowice, sheep – in the Institute’s Experimentation Station of Sheep Breeding in Bielanka (belonging to the Institute’s Experimental Station Raba Wyżna) and horses – in the Institute’s Experimental Station Chorzelów.

Department of Animal Reproduction Biotechnology

History of the Department

1952 – Laboratory of Reproductive Physiology was established within the Institute of Animal Production, from 1962 – Department of Reproductive Physiology and Artificial Insemination of Animals, from 1991 – Department of Animal Reproduction Physiology, from 2004 – Department of Animal Reproduction Biotechnology, Immuno- and Cytogenetics, since 2005 – Department of Animal Reproduction Biotechnology

Heads: Prof. Władysław Bielański, Ph.D. (1952-1968), Prof. Stefan Wierzbowski, Ph.D. (1968-1992), Prof. Zdzisław Smorąg, Ph.D. (since 1992)

The Department employs 28 people, including 14 scientific researchers and 14 technical ones.

Since the very beginning of the Department, its scientific research, popularizing and implementation activities have addressed issues concerning the organization of animal reproduction in Poland and the improvement of artificial insemination methods. Starting from the second half of the 1970s, the research topics increasingly focused on reproductive physiology and assisted reproductive technologies in females and males, with special emphasis on studies concerning gamete and embryo manipulations (i.e., experimental embryology).
