IX Picnic with Polish Konik, Jasło – Trzcinica, 24-25 September 2011

The IX Picnic with Polish Konik horses took place between 24 and 25 September 2011, during beautiful sunny weather in the area of the Agricultural School Complex in Trzcinica close to Jasło.

Honorary patronage over the whole event was assumed by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Marshal of the Podkarpackie voivodeship, the Jasło District Starosta, the Mayor of Jasło and the Director of the Podkarpackie Branch of the Agency for Restructuring and Modernization of Agriculture.

Among the organizers of the feast of Polish Konik horses were the Association of the Polish Konik Horse Breeders and Lovers, the District Association of Horse Breeders in Rzeszów, and the County Office of Jasło. Contributions to the organization of this event were also made by the Marshal Office of the Podkarpackie voivodeship, the City Office in Jasło, the Poviat Starosty in Jasło, the Agency for Restructuring and Modernisation of Agriculture, the Podkarpackie Agricultural Advisory Centre in Boguchwała – the Advisors’ Group in Jasło, and  the National Research Institute of Animal Production.

The National Research Institute of Animal Production marked its presence first of all as the coordinator for conservation of horse genetic resources. Traditionally, the Director of the Institute Prof. Jędrzej Krupiński Ph.D. founded prizes for the best stallion and the best mare of the Polish Konik type. The coordinator for the preservation of horse genetic resources, Iwona Tomczyk-Wrona Ph.D. Eng. was a member of the panel of judges for the breeding assessment as a representative of the Institute and on behalf of the Director of the Institute she awarded prizes with commemorative diplomas. All the participants also received occasional prizes for the participation in the event founded by the Institute.

The event gathered numerous breeders of the Polish Konik breed, particularly from the regions of Małopolska and Podkarpacie, but breeders from all of Poland were also present. On the occasion of the event Prof. Zbigniew Jaworski Ph.D., as a chairman called the General Meeting of the Association of Polish Konik Breeders. This fact added to the importance and prestige of the whole event. Among the participants were also representatives of the Polish Horse Breeders Association in Warsaw headed by its President, Władysław Brejta, Ph.D. Eng. as well as representatives of the regional associations of horse breeders from Kraków, Rzeszów and Lublin. During the convention many important issues associated  with breeding and maintenance of Polish Koniks were raised. A large number of issues concerned also protection programmes and their coordination by the National Research Institute of Animal Production. Iwona Tomczyk-Wrona, Ph.D., the coordinator for the preservation of horse genetic resources answered these questions.

The following events also took place as part of the main event:

  • Breeding championship of Polish Koniks in the stallion and mare category
  • Jasielska path of Polish Koniks
  • Bravery tests of Polish Koniks
  • Horse jumping competition
  • Competition of two-horse teams

Wonderful weather enabled conducting all the items of the programme and horses in the sunshine presented themselves exceptionally impressively. The animals were prepared very well. The Commission granted the most important titles from the breeding viewpoint to the following horses:

Apart from this, the Commission unanimously agreed that the best stallion of the Polish Konik type was HART (Kordon-Hubka), the owner of which is Ireneusz Wasilewski and the DESNA mare (Osman-Demeszka) was considered to be the most typical Polish Konik mare, the owner of which is Danuta Nocleg-Duljan. The owners of these horses were honoured with the prize of the Director of the National Research Institute of Animal Production, i.e. the occasional medal Patronus Animalium and a commemorative diploma.
