National strategy for sustainable use and conservation of farm animal genetic resources

On 22 November 2011 in Balice, the National Research Institute of Animal Production organized a conference entitled:

National strategy for sustainable use and conservation of farm animal genetic resources and the plan of action for these resources

under the honorary patronage of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Marek Sawicki, Ph.D.

The Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Andrzej Butra, Ph.D. opened the conference.

This was followed by a ceremony presenting state decorations for the employees of the National Research Institute of Animal Production. The Undersecretary of State, Andrzej Butra, Ph.D. and the Deputy Voivode of Małopolska, Andrzej Haręźlak awarded medals.

Prof. Jędrzej Krupiński, Ph.D. and Prof. Marian Różycki, Ph.D. received the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. Prof. Eugeniusz Herbut, Ph.D. and Prof. Zdzisław Smorąg, Ph.D. were honoured with the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. Stanisława Cięciel received the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. Next, 46 employees of the National Research Institute of Animal Production were honoured with the following decorations: Gold, Silver and Bronze Cross of Merit, Gold and Silver Medal for Long Service, and Badge for Distinguished Service to Agriculture.

In the next part of the conference the following speakers took the floor:

  • Elżbieta Martyniuk, Ph.D. presented the global plan of action for animal genetic resources and national strategies as an element of its implementation;
  • Prof. Jędrzej Krupiński, Ph.D. discussed the current state of the populations of protected farm animals in Poland;
  • Prof. Marian Różycki, Ph.D. discussed the implementation of the programme for the genetic improvement of animals and the protection of their variation;
  • Prof. Andrzej Filistowicz, Ph.D. presented the issue of the protection of genetic resources – theory and practice.

An animated discussion on the work related to the compilation of the National Strategy concluded the Conference.

Representatives of scientific centres, associations of animal breeders, self-government organizations and other subjects acting in the field of animal breeding took part in the Conference.

During the next part of the day there was the Workshop on “National strategy for sustainable use and conservation of farm animal genetic resources”.

The workshop was opened by the Director of the National Research of Animal Production, Prof. Jędrzej Krupiński, Ph.D. and conducted by Elżbieta Martyniuk, Ph.D.

The following people took part in the workshop: experts invited to cooperate in the compilation of the Strategies, members of Working Groups for protection of particular species of animals, members of the Coordinating Team, representatives of animal breeder associations, and employees of the Institute.

During the workshop there was a discussion concerning the content of expert opinion needed for the compilation of the National strategy for sustainable use and conservation of farm animal genetic resources with the Plan of Action.

A work schedule was also adopted during the meeting.

It was agreed that workshop participants will soon receive the corrected scheme of expert opinion and prospectus for final approval, which will constitute the guidelines for the compilation of the Strategy.
