1st Specialist Exhibition - Sokólski Horses Championship in Szepietowo

Between 28 and 29 May 2016, Specialist Exhibition – Sokólski Horses Championship was held in the Podlaski Agricultural Advisory Centre in Szepietowo, under the Honorary Patronage of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development – Krzysztof Jurgiel and the National Research Institute of Animal Production.

Sokólski horses have been included in general resources conservation programmes since 2008, as one of two local types of cold-blooded horses in Poland. At present, the population amounts to 1500 horses. It needs to be underlined that this has been the first exhibition since many decades organized solely for the promotion of these horses.

The panel of judges evaluated 38 individuals, including 20 mares and 18 one-year and two – year stallions, mainly coming from Podlaskie and Lubelskie voivodeship but also Warmian-Masurian and West-Pomeranian voivodeship.

Beautiful and temperamental Gabor (Bonprix - Baba) turned out to be the best stallion and also super champion of the exhibition, whereas exceptionally comely and typical Uzda (Ikar – Uralka) was the best mare. Both were born in the Podlasie region. May exhibiton also brought success for the Experimental Station of the National Research Institute of Animal Production in Kołbacz – the breeder and owner of auburn mare Gema (Beskid – Gustowna) born in 2014, which took the third place in the most numerous class of two-year Sokólski mares. The mare presented very good movement, nice head, neck and correct trunk. It is worth underlining that this is only the second breeding championship, but again ended with success for the Experimental Station in Kołbacz. The first one was held in Kętrzyn in 2015 where half-sister mare Gema and also light auburn Perła (Beskid - Paszka) took the second place. On the exhibition in Szepietowo, one-year stallion Pink Floyd (Beskid - Paszka) was also presented, which had its exhibition debut one year ago in Poznań, during the National Exhibition of Native Breeds.

On Sunday, during the festive decoration of the winners, Grażyna Polak, Ph.D. – the coordinator of Sokólski horses genetic resources conservation programmes handed the cups on behalf of the Management of the National Research Institute of Animal Production.
