17th All-Polish Youth Championship of Hucul Ponies

The 17th All-Polish Youth Championship of Hucul Ponies “Following the Trail of Hucul Pony”, 10-11 June 2017, Klikowa near Tarnów

Between 10 and 11 June 2017, the  All-Polish Youth Championship of Hucul Ponies was held already for the 17th time. Two days’ event called “Following the Trail of Hucul Pony” was held on the site of the former Stallion Herd Klikowa, at present governed by the Foundation “Klikowska Sanctuary of Polish Horses”.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Mr. Krzysztof Jurgiel, the Marshal of Małopolskie Voivodeship – Jacek Krupa and the President of Tarnów – Roman Ciepiela took the honorary patronage over the event. The event was organized by the Małopolski Horse Breeders Association in Kraków in partnership with the Polish Horse Breeders Association in Warsaw and Polish Hucul Pony Breeders Association. The panel of judges composed of: the President Marek Gibała – the Director of the District Horse Breeders Association in Rzeszów, Iwona Tomczyk-Wrona – the coordinator for horse genetic resources conservation, the Institute’s employee, Paulina Peckiel – the representative of the Polish Horse Breeders Association in Warsaw, Teresa Pracuch – the Director of the Małopolski Horse Breeders Association in Kraków, Andrzej Kosior – the Deputy Director of the District Horse Breeders Association in Lublin and Andrzej Goraus – the Director of former Stallion Herd Klikowa did the evaluation. The breeding evaluation was conducted jointly in six categories, including three stallion categories: one-year-old, two-year-old and three-year-old stallions and three categories of mares: one-year-old, two-year-old and three-year-old mares. In the championship, the committee evaluated 49 young horses exhibited by 21 exhibitors from 6 voivodeships: Małopolskie, Subcarpathian, Lubelskie, Silesian, Wielkopolskie and Świętokrzyskie. The Hucul ponies from the native areas of their occurrence i.e. from Małopolska and Subcarpathia were presented most numerously.

The stallion ODEON-O (Lotnik – Olimpia-O) bred and owned by the Institute’s Odrzechowa Experimental Station was chosen stallion champion. It also gained the title of the Best Horse of the Show. Mare SEREDA (Hasan from Sadyba – Siberia) bred and owned by the Kietrz Agricultural Conglomerate Ltd. – Hucul Stud “Gładyszów” became the mare champion.

The stallion ODEON-O, mare SEREDA and mare OREWA were also distinguished as the best Hucul ponies in breed type with a prestigious Award of the Director of the National Research Institute of Animal Production – National Coordinator for farm animal genetic resources. The award is handed during major breeding exhibitions with the aim of underlining and appreciating the role of the breeders in work associated with biodiversity protection in genetic resources of horse breeds included in conservation programmes. The mare SEREDA was distinguished for the type in category Older Mares, whereas mare OREWA (Wieśniak-Oktawia) bred and owned by Andrzej Pelc from Małkowice was considered to be the best in breed type in the category of Younger Mares. On behalf of the Director of the National Research Institute of Animal Production the awards for the type were handed by Iwona Tomczyk-Wrona, Ph.D., the coordinator of horse genetic resources conservation, accompanied by Paweł Mazurek – the President of Polish Horse Breeders Association and Mieczysław Janczyk – the President of the Polish Hocul Pony Breeders Association. The 4th Małopolskie Competition of Driving Horse-Drawn Carts was an accompanying event. Apart from the prestigious breeding and selective rank, two-days’ exhibition was an attraction for numerously gathered public and enabled spending the weekend nicely outdoors.
