18th International Fair of Agricultural Techniques AGROTECH and 12th Timber Industry Fair...

Between 16 and 18 March 2012, the 18th International Fair of Agricultural Techniques AGROTECH and the 12th Timber Industry & Forest Resources Management Fair were held in Kielce.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Marek Sawicki assumed the honorary patronage over the fair.

AGROTECH fair provides an opportunity to become acquainted with a wide range of agricultural equipment and see modern equipment for each sector of agriculture presented by Polish producers and dealers of foreign companies. This year’s curiosity was the winner of the competition for the Agricultural Machine of the Year 2012 – a gigantic combine harvester New Holland CR 9090 (record-holder entered in the Guinness Book of Records for picking over 551 tons of wheat in 8 hours!).

Direct Culinary Action – Native breeds of farm animals

The Direct Culinary Action entitled the “Native Breeds of Farm Animals” took place on 10 March in Warsaw. The National Research Institute of Animal Production was the co-organizer of this action which was organized traditionally by Warsaw Slow Food.

Slow Food is an international non-profit organization, which defines its aim as “protection of the right to taste”. It was established in 1986 in Italy and from the beginning it dealt with broadly understood protection and support of small regional food producers – particularly of original food, produced in a unique way in various regions of the world. During the 15 years of its existence, Slow Food has turned into an international movement gathering over 60,000 members on all continents.

Slow Food commenced its activity in Poland in 2002. The organizational structure of the movement is based on the so-called convivia, namely associations of people, the first of which was established in Krakow.

Opening of the laboratory of the Department of Animal Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics

After a major renovation, laboratories and office rooms in the Department of Animal Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics of the National Research Institute of Animal Production were officially opened on 7 March at 1:00 p.m in the presence of the Institute’s management, invited guests and employees.

The ribbon was cut by the Directors of the National Research Institute of Animal Production: Prof. Jędrzej Krupiński Ph.D., Prof. Eugeniusz Hebut, Ph.D. and Józef Śliwa, Ph.D. Eng. The Head of the Department, Prof. Barbara Rejduch, Ph.D. showed the guests around the the cytogenetic laboratory (together with microscopic analysis laboratory) and the laboratories for DNA and RNA analysis, identification of animal protein in feed mixtures, and blood typing research in farm animals.

 

12th International Cattle Fair and 15th International Pig and Poultry Farm Fair

Between 24 and 26 February 2012, the 12th International Cattle Fair and the 15th International Pig and Poultry Farm Fair were held in the Atlas Arena hall in Łódź.

In an effort to meet the expectations of exhibitors and visitors, the organizers decided to combine this year’s fairs and organize the two events at the same time and place.

The International Fair Cattle Farm and Pig and Poultry Farm is a highly specialist fair for cattle, pig and poultry breeders. It is one of the largest trade fairs in Poland. Organized for the first time 15 years ago, it has become a permanent feature in the calendar of agricultural events in Poland.

Can rape protein substitute soya protein in feeds?

The paper under this title was presented by Prof. Franciszek Brzóska, Ph.D. in Agricultural Sciences on 18 February 2012 in Poznań, during the International “Premiery” Fair and the 9th Forum of Rape Producers. Marek Sawicki, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development formally opened the Forum. The Polish Association of Rape Producers organized the Scientific and Technological Session. The Polagra-Premiery International Fair of Agricultural Mechanization 2012

The Polagra-Premiery International Fair of Agricultural Mechanization 2012 was held in Poznań between 16 and 19 February 2012. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Marek Sawicki, assumed the honorary patronage over the Fair.

During the event, almost 300 exhibitors from 16 countries presented the latest world-class agricultural equipment – tractors, combine harvesters, seeders and sprinklers. Apart from the machinery and equipment, also spare parts, plant protection products, fertilizers, feeds and professional literature were on show. This year almost 200 market novelties were presented during the Fair. Twenty-eight products were awarded with the Gold Medal. Minister Sawicki emphasized the significance of the growing number of Polish agricultural companies present at the Fair.

Genetically modified organisms

Genetically modified organisms – discussion in the Presidential Palace

The moratorium on the regulations of the Animal Feed Act, which bans the use of GM feeds in animal nutrition in Poland, ends in 2012. On 8 February 2012, the Public Debate Forum conducted by President Bronisław Komorowski was held in the Presidential Palace in Warsaw. It was entitled: “Genetically modified organisms. Necessity or choice? Opportunity or threat?”. Prof. Franciszek Brzóska, Ph.D. in Agricultural Sciences from the Department of Animal Nutrition and Feed Science of the National Research Institute of Animal Production was invited to participate in the debate as an observer and expert.

IMPROFARM project

On 10 and 11 January 2012 in Kraków, there was an international meeting that inaugurated work on the IMPROFARM project, carried out within the framework of the European lifelong learning Leonardo da Vinci.

The National Research Institute of Animal Production is the leader of this project.

On 16th December 2011, the delegation from French National Institute for Agricultural Research INRA and the French Embassy was hosted in the National Research Institute of Animal Production in Balice
